Support Unit

Support Classes

The main focus of the support classes at Blayney High School is to successfully support students to reach their full potential by celebrating and developing each student’s strengths and abilities and meeting their unique learning needs.

By providing dedicated support classes we can ensure that students have access to tailored learning experiences and resources that are adjusted to meet the students learning needs and goals, in a highly supported environment. There is also a strong focus on developing student’s literacy, numeracy, social and independent living skills to help them develop as independent learners and citizens.

Integration

Providing students with appropriate and individually based integration opportunities is something that is a key focus at Blayney High school. It is our belief that meeting students learning needs also involves allowing them to work to their full capacity and experiencing the many excellent learning opportunities in many of our specialist learning environments.

Integration into mainstream classes allows students to access specialist equipment and teachers while still allowing them to access the assistance provided by the Support Unit. The level and type of integration is determined on a case by case basis that takes into account the student’s strengths, difficulties, required adjustments and learning goals. We encourage all students to participate in some mainstream integration.

Transition

Supported and graduated exposure to new learning or work environments is vital to ensuring a smooth and successful transition. We focus on providing students with ample opportunities to experience new environments and situations with graduated transition that helps them feel secure while extending their skills and experience.

We support students to transition to high school from primary school by giving them extra opportunities to visit the school when they are still in primary school. We also support students who are transitioning from school, by giving them opportunities to visit and experience workplaces and tertiary education providers.

The Learning Support Teaching staff:

The support unit consists of special education teachers and School Learning and Support Officers (SLSOs). Teachers plan and implement learning experiences within the Support Classes and plan for and monitor students’ integration into mainstream classes, facilitate transitions to and from school and assess and report on student progress and development. Student Learning Support Officers (SLSOs) work to support students across all settings in accordance with each student’s Individual Education Plan.
