Careers Adviser - Ms Donella Zakaria
We are committed to providing all students with access to equitable opportunities and up-to-date information, whether their goals involve university, TAFE, apprenticeships, traineeships, or full-time work.
Careers education is not just about choosing a job — it’s about helping students build the skills and confidence to navigate their future with purpose.
For more information, contact our Careers Adviser at the school on 02 6368 2100.
At Blayney High school, we are proud of our strong track record in supporting students who choose to pursue university study after school. Each year, our students receive early and standard university offers across a wide range of courses and institutions.
Students have access to a variety of opportunities to explore higher education, including visits to Charles Sturt University, the University of Wollongong, and the University of Western Sydney. We also host on-site visits from universities such as the University of Sydney, University of Canberra, and the University of Newcastle, providing students with valuable insights into course options, university life, and career pathways.
Our Careers Adviser works closely with students and families to assist with subject selection, ATAR requirements, UAC applications, early entry programs, and scholarship opportunities, ensuring each student is well-prepared and supported on their journey into higher education.

At Blayney High School, students have the opportunity to gain nationally recognised qualifications while still at school through Vocational Education and Training (VET) courses.
We offer a range of school-based VET courses that are delivered on campus by qualified teachers. These courses allow students to develop industry-specific skills and contribute towards their HSC and ATAR (in some cases). VET courses combine theory with practical, hands-on learning, making them ideal for students who want to build skills that are directly linked to future employment or further training.
VET Courses offered at Blayney High include
Primary Industries.pdf (210 KB)
Hospitality – Cookery.pdf (190 KB)
Construction.pdf (190 KB)
Manufacturing and Engineering.pdf (190 KB)
Retail Services.pdf (200KB)
Students can also enrol in TVET (TAFE-delivered VET) courses, which are run by TAFE NSW and delivered off-site at local campuses. These courses give students access to specialised facilities and trainers, and offer qualifications in areas such as automotive, electrotechnology, health services, and more.
Both school-based VET and TAFE TVET courses help students:
- Gain real-world skills and workplace knowledge
- Work towards an industry-recognised qualification
- Enhance their employability
- Explore potential career paths while still at school
VET and TVET courses are an excellent option for students who prefer practical learning and want to keep multiple career and study pathways open.
At Blayney High School, we are proud to offer a strong and growing School-Based Apprenticeship and Traineeship (SBAT) program, with more SBAT students than many larger schools in our region. SBATs allow eligible students to begin a nationally recognised qualification, gain valuable paid workplace experience, and contribute to their HSC — all while still at school.
Students typically work with an employer one day per week and attend TAFE or another training provider, while continuing their regular school studies. SBATs are available across a wide range of industries, including construction, business services, agriculture, early childhood education, hospitality, and more.
All SBATs must be discussed with the Careers Adviser before starting. They need to begin in Year 10 or by Term 1 of Year 11, and students must be assessed as suitable before the Principal can approve the placement.
Our Careers Adviser works closely with students, families, employers, and training providers to support every step of the SBAT journey.
Work Experience at Blayney High School
Work experience is a valuable part of our careers education program, helping students explore different industries, develop practical skills, and gain insight into the world of work. At Blayney High School, all Year 10 students complete two weeks of mandatory work experience — one in Term 2 (prior to senior subject selection) and a second in Term 4.
Students usually organise their own placement, with support from parents and the Careers Adviser. All placements must be approved by the school, and the required paperwork must be completed correctly and submitted on time.
In preparation, students also take part in workplace readiness activities, covering topics such as workplace expectations, communication, WHS (Work Health & Safety), and appropriate behaviour.
